A Bag Of Tools

a poem by R.L. Sharpe

Isn't it strange
That princes and kings,
And clowns that caper
In sawdust rings,
And common people
Like you and me
Are builders for eternity?
Each is given a bag of tools.
A shapeless mass,
A book of rules;
And each must make-
Ere life is flown-
A stumbling block
Or a stepping stone.

  1. I'm not so sure about 'the book of rules' but I think the final four lines are so true!

  2. I think we all have some kind if rules - even if they're our own. I remember watching a Star Trek episode one time where a young woman had a hundred some rules for herself to aid in her learning process, so she wouldn't forget vital lessons she was learning.

  3. Ah yes! I think most of us develop our own 'rule book' over the years but to some extent that consists of jettisoning some of the 'rules' we've inherited and maybe taken for granted because we grew up with them.

It's a very interesting poem and an awe-inspiring thought that we are 'builders for eternity'! What a responsibility and yet how very motivating!

  4. Yes there are some rules we can definitely live without! And yes, it is quite a responsibility - and to realize that our actions, thoughts, and our very being have made an impact, perhaps in ways we're not even aware of.
