Seeing The Wonders In Life

There's a great children's book called "The Seven Wonders Of Sassafras Springs" (by Betty Birney) about a boy who is challenged by his father to see if he can find seven "wonders" in the "ordinary"  town he lives in.  The boy believes that wonders are only to be seen in far away, "glamorous" places like Egypt and Greece.  He accepts the challenge of finding seven wonders in the time span of a week, with his father's promise that he will send him on a trip to Colorado as a reward.  Without spoiling the story (it's worth reading it yourself), the boy shows the reader that the secret to discovering the wonders of life is to adopt the attitude of a child.   It reminds us of how much we miss by taking everyone and everything for granted.

  1. That sounds like a delightful book, I love the idea of finding and appreciating wonders in the ordinary.

  3. I sometimes feel a bit of an 'odd one out' because I don't long to travel the world; but quite honestly, the ever-changing view of the mountains from my windows, the changing of the seasons in my little garden and the way the sunlight sometimes falls through my lace curtains - these things are quite enough for me!

So I'm glad to realise I'm not such an eccentric after all!

Thank you, Betsy - always something interesting to discover on your blog!

  4. It's lovely that you appreciate what you have. By the way - being an "eccentric" may mean that you see things differently than others, which may be a good thing!

  6. We just moved to the mountains and I have a library card now to our little library. I will see if they have this book. It sounds wonderful. We took our grandkids out last week on a nature hike. It was hot - We walked only a long block because they had been at the local park here and were hot. In that one block they saw so much~ I have pics but not sure when I'll get them up. It was so fun. Reminds me of the description of this book. They definitely picked out seven wonders.

  7. Hi Sandy! The book is a great reminder to the child in all of us to appreciate every moment and every person. Life always has a message just especially for us if remember to look and listen.
